Decision on French wind farm development

27 September 2005

MEDIA RELEASE

After months of speculation it appears that a windfarm will not be built on the Ecrehous site.

It is understood that Monsieur François Loos, the French Minister for Industry who has special responsibility for energy in the Paris government, has taken the decision that only one windfarm will be built.

The chosen location is approximately seven kilometres offshore from Le Havre, in the Seine estuary, where a total of 21 windmills will be erected.

The Policy and Resources Committee took a Report and Proposition to the States last February to keep Islanders informed of the proposals to possibly develop a site near the Ecrehous.

On hearing today’s news Senator Walker, President of the Committee, commented: “I am sure many Islanders will be pleased to hear of this news. I am not aware of the reasons for the decision at this stage as we are yet to receive any official communication. However, this issue has given us an important opportunity to liaise with the French authorities in the neighbouring Normandy region. I am sure that we will continue to work together to ensure the ecological safety of the Ecrehous reef for the future.”
